Well, the Sun has finally started on its Northward course in Dec. This journey is not the same as the transition of the Sun into Makar or Capricorn (in January nowadays). The northward movement of the Sun is only observed on the 4th day post Winter solstice. This date occurs nowadays in Dec 21st with the observation of Uttarayan 4days later on Dec 25th.

Around 1700 years ago there was an alignment between the Winter Solstice and the point of entry of Sun into Makar which has now changed due to the precession of the equinoxes.

On this course, it will first transit the signs of Saturn: Makar and Kumbh (Capricorn and Aquarius respectively)… since these signs are related to the graha nayak Saturn, there are different opinions on what should be the right course of action/niyama to follow from this point on.

Some suggest that the Sun is possessed of its movement through Saturnine signs and of course as the Sun and Saturn are enemies astrologically, a certain course of action may be useful…. and of course they may indeed be right.

Nevertheless I have an idea about what sort of sadhana may be useful in this time of Sun’s transit through the Saturnine signs. There is a beautiful stotra called Aditya Hrdayam which was given by Agastya Muni to the avatara Rama a few Yugas ago. This stotra is especially useful in causing a feeling of happiness to run through the system when recited thrice: ideally at least once at sunrise.

Those who wish to bring the Sun into their lives, those who feel that Saturn’s influence on their lives has taken a turn for the worse may find benefit by recitation of the Aditya Hrdayam. It calms the system by an infusion of Hiranyagarbha shakti of the Sun when recited at the precise point at which the Sun rises.

It may be remembered at this point that that the great warrior Rama who was of course born of the solar dynasty which of course was born from Surya (and therefore denotes the Sun: either external or internally) was under Saturn’s influence for 14 years of vanvasa (denoting the external idea of the Sun being in the night of Dakshinayana till then) AND then getting the energy to fight dark energies like Ravana….  that is to say that the night of the Sun is now over, but the act of fighting Ravana has still to be undertaken (thus Uttarayan)…. (thus fulfilling the external criteria of the Sun transiting through an enemy sign of Capricorn and Aquarius)

It is to be noted that the point at which he got the Aditya Hrdayam from Agastya marks a turning point in the life of even this great Avatara….  and if it worked for Shree Rama, there is no reason why it should not work for you.

For those who find it impossible to do homam, which would be best, this, in my opinion is a fitting sadhana for the precise internal meaning of the Sun’s transit of Capricorn and Aquarius.
