There is a story by a particular supposedly “Hindu” website circulating about how Shirdi Sai Baba was elevated to Deity status in India allegedly using questionable means.
This above story is nonsensical. The real change in perceptions started when a sceptical journalist called MV Kamath went and investigated the stories of Sai Baba in the 1970’s.
He went for 2 weeks initially and ended up researching Sai Baba of Shirdi for 2 years. Eventually he became a devotee of Shirdi Baba.
His book which came out in the mid 1970’s with detailed names and places of miracles attributed to Shirdi Sai Baba was then read by a few people in Bombay. This in turn lead to the largely accurate but with slight Bolly interpolations… film “Sai Baba of Shirdi” in 1974/5.
Raj Kapoor who lost all his money after the film “Mera Naam Joker” went and put the 35 mm film containers of his next film “Bobby” in the Samadhi graha of Shirdi temple for a week prior to release.
The film became a mega box office success and contributed to the legend of Shirdi Sai Baba.
Those who wish can look up the book further. It frequently happens in this day and age that the genuine saints may be insulted over reasons usually stemming from hate- in this particular case, never was a more genuine saint born in India than Sai Baba of Shirdi.
The man was a spiritual powerhouse and some of his miracles completely defy all explanation.
Vimalananda of the Aghora books fame speaks of Sampradaha: Having researched Shirdi Sai throughout my younger years I can confidently say that here was one of the really few genuine examples of “Sampradaha”
Whether he was Kabir reborn or somebody else, his internal realisation must have been truly great.
As he used to pass the Hanuman temple in Shirdi in the times when he lived, he would come into Aavesha and would have to be restrained by his followers, “Hanuman is my brother, he used to say”

All real saints are a bit mad… it’s partly because they deal with an awakened energy called Kundalini which can …. and indeed in many cases, it frequently does burn your nervous system and it’s various fuses which keep the person’s personality intact.

As an aside here is a short Twitter scrollable thread on Shirdi Sai and other real Sadgurus:

One of the few saints he taught was a Brahmana who came to reside in Sakori eventually and became an Avadhoota. That man later became renowned as Upsani Maharaj and took on the entire might of the state in order to teach the girl child (which was a big problem at that time).
So then….. why did that Brahmana accept Sai Baba as his Guru?
Well, the answer to that is because, two years prior to meeting Sai Baba, that Brahmana had managed to go into Samadhi but when he came out of Samadhi, he was left with a problem of a terrible irregularity with his breathing. He went far and wide looking for an answer and struggled for two years with this problem. Nobody could cure him, but the moment he met Shirdi Sai his problem disappeared in 15 days.
Sai Baba proclaimed that the young Upasni was “Bhagwan” himself and made him stay in a place infested with snakes and scorpions which used to crawl all over his body all day.

Narasimha Rao may recall our meeting with the women of Sakori who were taught homa karya by this Avadhoot when those women were mere children……….. now in advanced years of their life, they confirmed many of these stories… we recorded a long interview in Marathi which I will publish later.

This is my film from 2012 on this subject which has been screened in Germany and Austria to acclaim and explains the idea behind Sai Baba of Shirdi. It can be viewed here:
